Hello and welcome to my first post on my new blog! I moved over to having a blog on my own site because it's just easier, more convenient, and makes more sense all around. I am not really much of a "blogger" so forgive my poor writing and any spelling or grammar issues you may run in to.
So not too long ago I worked on illustrations for a little game called "Battleborn" that came out for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Battleborn was developed by Gearbox Software who are best known for their extremely popular "Borderlands" IP. I was part of a team of background artists working freelance for a brand new studio called Secret Sauce Studios, and we painted background illustrations for the game's 2D cutscenes. If you're interested you can view all three cutscenes here.
There were 3 animated cutscenes in all that Secret Sauce handled and I must have painted over 60 backgrounds for them! I think it's been enough time since the title released to be able to show you some examples of the work that I did.
These are not all of the backgrounds I did, just the ones I liked the best out of the bunch. I have divided the work up into cutscenes and as you will see most of my contributions were made on the first and third cutscenes. In my opinion the work done for the 3rd cutscene was the best so I'll share those first and then we will go in descending order.
These backgrounds have a very "cartoony" style to them in order to match the art direction for the game. It was a far deviation from what I normally do as those familiar with my work will notice, but I appreciated the challenge and actually was just honored to be part of the project. I hope to have more stuff like this to show you guys in the future. Enjoy!
Here are the backgrounds that I painted for cutscene 3. You can see this cutscene after defeating the final boss in the game's story mode.
For cutscene two I only actually did one painting as another artist was handling these backgrounds and I think they needed me to help with this one to lighten the load just a tad.
And finally here are the background illustrations I did for cutscene 1. You may notice a slight style difference than what you saw in C3 in a few of these. They were in the early stages when we were still trying to establish the style we wanted but by the time C3 came along we had it nailed down!
